A brief guide to achieving fit
It’s an amazing moment – dare I say liberating – when you first recognize what it means, what it feels like, to wear clothing that fits. For some it happened very early in their lives, others much later. And while you won’t see us dishing out traditional style advice (we think it’s entirely a personal thing), we do have a few things to say about fit. If you want to know if you’re frumpy (at least, in the choice of the shirt you’re wearing), look out for the following:
- Shoulder seams – where your sleeves meet the body of your shirt, the shoulder seam, should fall at the top of your shoulder. Mass brands tend to cut their shirts big (to fit more people, of course), and so you’ll often see the seam sliding down onto the arm. This is sloppy.
- Chest – garments should in general fall close to the body. Ideally the chest of your shirt should slightly show the contours of your chest. If you pull your arms back and see stress at the buttons, the shirt could be a little too tight.
- The tuck – look out for massive amounts of ballooning happening when you tuck in your shirt. Not flattering.
- Waist – shirt tails out, stand in profile to a mirror and look at how the shirt hangs off your body. Can you grab at a lot of fabric? That’s frumpy.
- Sleeves – mass brands also tend to make sleeves very wide, resulting in draping of fabric and folds galore. Similar to your chest, the sleeves should give hint to the contours of your arm.
All for now. Hope this helps!
