On April 9th, Hugh & Crye guys James & Carl were asked to speak to a group of 16 girls at John P. Sousa Middle School in Southeast, Washington, DC. Their teacher, Trinaty Fonana, was aware of our company and thought it would be nice for us to help the girls with an upcoming fashion show.
This was the first time we’ve ever been asked to do something like this, and admittedly, we were 1/2 excited and 1/2 anxious. Sure we know #menswear and ecommerce and startups… but would we be able to help a group of middle school girls from DC?
The girls split themselves into four teams, that had distinct themes for their respective segments of the show: Sassy, Radiant, Fierce, and Bold. And they asked our advice on styling. Yikes.
Here’s what we said:
- Be comfortable. Above all, it’s important to be comfortable with what you’re wearing. Your goal should be to show your best self, everyday, and that means you have to be comfortable with what you’re wearing.
- Have fun! Fashion doesn’t have to be “serious”. Go out and have fun with whatever you choose to wear.
- Don’t worry about what others think. To us, the best sort of fashion is very personal – it’s style. It comes from within, and even though it might not be for everyone, it might be perfect for you. That’s what matters.
- Try new things! Part of fashion is simply getting ready every day, and we enjoy trying something new every day. Could be a new accessory, or coordinating a top to a different bottom – whatever. Feel free to mix and match in ways that you have never before.
The girls and their teacher were incredibly grateful for us coming by and helping – and honestly, it was really nice for us to connect with the community here in DC.
Good luck girls, May 12th is not far away!
