Hugh & Crye - We make shirts that fit

Volunteering at Martha’s

Our second donation drop to Martha’s this year went a little different. Our first visit consisted of simply dropping off customer donated shirts, what we call “uglies” (due to their sloppy fit.)

This time we actually volunteered, thanks to the suggestion of Monet (an employee at Martha’s Outfitters).

During this visit, while Francisco (also of Martha’s), carefully examined each shirt and sorted all by quality and size, Ernest and I ‘worked the crowd’:  we helped guys pick out clothing.

Many of these at-risk men are referrals from DC agencies.  Some come from shelters.  Some were previously incarcerated and are looking to get back on their feet.  Others simply needed a decent set of clothes for an upcoming job interview.

A lot of these guys have what Monet calls an ‘emotional bubble’. They haven’t been treated with respect their entire lives, and are a little skeptical when greeted by Martha’s employees in a friendly manner.

They certainly appreciated getting a hand at picking out clothes.  But in the end, it was a very rewarding experience for us.  Helping others does help ourselves.  We’re glad we volunteered, and hope to continue to do so indefinitely.  Please let us know if you’d like to join us, we’d love to have you.
