Hugh & Crye - We make shirts that fit

Darts

Women tend to have more curves than men.  In order for a garment to fit a woman well – to actually accommodate or accentuate those curves – it takes a little help from the sewing miracle that is the dart.

A dart is essentially a fold sewn into fabric to provide shape.  Look for them in women’s clothing – shirts, skirts, pants etc – they’re everywhere! They’re also used in men’s clothing.  We use them in all of our shirts – two vertical darts – to pull in the fabric just a bit, and follow the natural contour of the back.  And that’s why our shirts do not balloon out when tucked in, or billow in the lower back.

While many old school shirtmakers and boutique brands have been using darts for years, most mass brands do not.  Mostly for one reason:  darts are costly, since they require some attention and dexterity by the hands of the sewing operator, and thus increasing overall production time.

What do you think about the darts on your H&C shirt?  Women that gifted H&C, we’d love to hear from you as well!
